IPS popularity in the consumer market is driving a shift in the industrial market towards IPS-based TFT displays with symmetric viewing angles and high contrast.
IPS (In-Plane Switching) is a display panel technology which was originally the result of improving another popular TFT panel technology, the TN panel (Twisted Nematic). Due to the molecule structure of the TN panel, one of the downsides of this technology is the well-known limited viewing angle and color inversion, particularly in one viewing direction. This shift in color and contrast is related to how light is guided through the panel.
In an IPS panel, the molecule structure is organized differently as they are parallel to the glass of the panel. As a result, the viewing angle from any direction is much more uniform, with improved contrast and practically no color-inversion.
For many years TN-based TFT display panels dominated the industrial display market, and the technology still holds good market share. However, IPS popularity in the consumer market is driving a shift in the industrial market towards IPS-based TFT displays with symmetric viewing angles and high contrast.
